2023 Trend Forecasting

As we round out the year I’d like to make a few predictions for what we can expect to see going “viral” in 2023. I’ve noticed a few key trends —in the media, from high end vendors, pinterest, and at designer markets—and my clients are starting to catch on. Here’s what I think will stick:

  1. Curves I’m seeing a lot more organic shapes in furniture and decor being used. This signals to me that the general consumer is becoming more aware of form and not just function in the way we live, design and decorate. In furnishing and decor there seems to be an emphasis on hand-sculpted pottery, curved sofas (like this one from seasonal living I used in a patio project), and other small furniture pieces that are circular or have rounded edges. In remodeling & new construction projects, my clients are asking for arches and curves in doorways, range hoods, fireplaces, and windows.

Adding curves is a simple way to take a standard space and elevate it into an eye-catching character piece, and I think we will continue to see this pop up more in 2023. I personally plan to use arched mirrors in an upcoming project, as well as a range hood with a beautiful tapered profile.

2. Cozy Minimalism

Minimalism and modern decor has gotten a bad reputation over the years as being “cold” and “bland” but I think 2023 will see a rebranding of this style. People are getting comfortable with the idea of “less is more” after being stuck in their homes with all of their belongings for the past few years, and that is being reflected in how we style our spaces. My clients are requesting clutter-free environments and investing in a few quality statement pieces, while warming it up with throw pillows and simple yet thoughtful decor.

To me, “cozy minimalism” is a celebration of textures, quality over quantity, and intentionality. In design, this might look like a bucle chair on a concrete floor, textured wallpaper, and a large-scale pattern woven rug. I’d bet velvet fabrics, muted colors, mixing wood tones and lots of natural elements will continue to be a favorite in 2023 as well.
